What is coaching by definition?
The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
I further define coaching as a process of inward seeking that honors and reflects the deepest truths of each unique individual, on their unique path of accomplishment. It is a supportive process that ignites one’s inner potential and evokes levels of self-mastery, otherwise left untapped.
What is the duration of an effective coaching program?
My programs are 3-6 months minimum (depending on your program of choice), requiring consistent meetings. After reaching the 3-6 month mark, we conduct a progress assessment and create a master action plan for you. From there on out, we meet as needed, or continue your program as desired.
Why the program minimums? This gives us enough time and space to support new growth as you stretch and expand in new ways. Resistance is very normal and 3 months allows us, as co-creators, enough time to support you as you explore life in new ways and begin to reach farther than you have before.
What do coaching credentials signify?
Coaching is credentialed at the peer-review, certification and professional recognition level. This means that the US government does not issue licensing requirements for the coaching profession. Other peer-reviewed certification professions include: personal training, bodywork, Reiki and consulting. Licensing is reserved for professions that enter more into the diagnosis arenas.
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) is the currently recognized corporation that oversees training and credentialing standards worldwide. When looking for a qualified coach, you can ensure quality of training by seeking a coach credentialed under an ICF accredited program.
The ICF also offers additional coach certifications, beyond program accreditation. Either direct ICF certification, or certification resulting from ICF accredited training warrants professional recognition. Coaching certification, or a degree, ensures formal and professional training.
Ultimately, the quality of the coaching experience is up to the individual providing services, as well as how well a coach/client is matched. In the coaching field, it is best business practice to offer an initial, no-obligation, session so that the client may experience the coach’s style and approach, experience a variety of coaches and choose which coach is the best fit for their unique goals, gifts and abilities.
